New lease of life for old Stellenbosch building

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

The Old Agricultural Hall on the banks of the Eerste River is the new home of iThemba Craft Art[1] and Stellenbosch Crafts Alive[2] under the dynamic directorship of Anna Kruger. Craft, Craft Art, Functional and Fine Art are showcased side by side in harmonious juxtaposition and reflect the creative expressions and aspirations of our community. The Old Agricultural Hall is admirably suited for community-based creative and educational activities. Under the auspices of Stellenbosch Crafts Alive, exhibitions[3] and spotlight events[4] as well as skills training, workshops and mentorship programs by specialists in their respective fields are regular features.

Other important aspects of the training programs are product development, an introduction to business principles and entrepreneurship which, in turn, promote professional efficiency, individual growth and teamwork. An added bonus is “Aunty Sophie’s Kitchen”, an on-site training facility, where delicious breakfasts, light meals, cakes and coffees are served in a relaxed and peaceful indoor-outdoor environment.

The spirit of ubuntu is palpable at the Old Agricultural Hall, brought about by a dedicated, hardworking team, a creative community and a venerable old building. The Old Agricultural Hall has indeed become an asset for our community, our town and every visitor to Stellenbosch.
